REVIEW of "Haldane's
Daedalus Revisited" Edited by Krishna R. Dronamraju,
with Foreword by Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg, Oxford
University Press, 1995.
Review
`What a remarkable man JBS was! You have done the scientific
community a great service by producing this book.' Dr Anne
McLaren, The Wellcome Trust,
`Daedalus Revisited is made even
more valuable by its having an introduction written by Haldane's
colleague Krishna Dronamraju and commentaries by eight distinguished
scientists.' Times Higher Education Supplement
`The small
size of this welcome book belies the depth and quality of
the material. What sets this work apart from mere science
fiction is both its accuracy in predicting the emergence
of modern science and its positive and negative sociopolitical
influences. This book would be a useful addition to courses
on the history of philosophy of science, because it challenges
both scientist and layperson to reflect on the roles of science
in society.' J.M. Tomich, Kansas State University, Choice,
December 1995 Vol. 33 No. 4
Book Description
Daedalus or Science and the Future by J. B. S. Haldane caused
a sensation when it was published in 1923 because of its
predictions of future scientific developments; including
`test-tube' babies. This new book combines a reprint of that
classic work along with the comments of several eminent scientists
on its significance today. Haldane's Daedalus Revisited is
a unique examination of the complex relationship between
technology, society, and politics. It also examines the impact
of predictions on the future development of science and technology
and in turn the impact of these developments on our ethical
outlook. The contributors include Joshua Lederberg, Freeman
Dyson and Ernst Mayr, David Weatherall and M. F. Perutz.
